He claimed he drank their blood before turning his victims into sludge. Seventy years after the execution of John George Haigh, MD looks back at the case that shocked 40s Britain

Description

Acid Bath Killer John George Haigh has a special place in the pantheon of Britain’s most memorable murderers. He was undone by carelessness and his own arrogance, and when the authorities put a stop to his deadly activities, he seemed to revel in his own notoriety. Haigh went to the gallows at Wandsworth Prison 70 years ago. What better time, then, for us to look back on this extraordinary case in the third part of our series on The Hangings of Albert Pierrepoint?

And talking of memorable killers, predatory couple Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez, con-man Harry Powers and black widow Inez Brennan all feature among a host of others in our not-to-be-missed special report on The Lonely Hearts Killers. Don’t miss it.
