Eva Dugan was quite a character. It’s a pity she was a killer and had to be executed, because her capacity to make people laugh was quite a gift. By complete contrast, Bertha De Spaen Peterson, a middle-aged spinster of Biddenden, Kent, had not one saving grace. Her soul destroyed by consuming spite and snobbery, she killed – but died alone and unloved.
