Description

Social depreivation is often nameed as a factor in crime, and some would advocate that it is the whole reason for criminal drives. When you read the Louie Calvert story, titled Gallows For A Leeds Murderess, you will certainly be able to see how a life of misery and deprivation can lead to desperation, and ultimately murder. Louie Calvert showed a total lack of compassion for her victims, but curiously, an utter disregard for herself too. Perhaps all the finer feelings, which ordinary mortals take for granted, had been drubbed out of her, and hardened her to a callous degree. However, at around the same time, the well known Edith Thompson was hanged for her part in a murder, and her circumstances, as readers know, were comparatively privileged. One can only conclude that there is no excuse for taking the life of another, and that the murderous sense of deprivation rests solely in the mind of the deprived.

The theme of execution runs through this month’s issue, with an account of John Johnson’s horrifying bungled hanging. The execution, Askern, who held the dubious distinction of being Leeds Gaol’s principal hangman, provoked a storm of public outrage when details of this execution were made known. Tellingly, it was the last execution Askern was to carry out in Leeds, as by that time, hanging had became a matter of compassion, humanity and professionalism. You can also read James Berry’s ideas on the swiftest and most painless methods of hanging, to compare.

They’ll Never Electrocute Me, is a marvel of detection on the part of the sleuths who tracked down a killer rapist. Up until the last, killer Jerry Thompson was convinced he would get a reprieve. Clearly, he thought that the death sentence was unjust, and went to his death firmly believing that terrorising the town and killing his long-standing friend and colleague’s daughter (and being proud of it) simply did not merit the ultimate penalty. One wonders how many villains, past and present, have been executed or imprissoned, feeling bitter at the force of justice when it finally comes. So many accounts from witnesses at executions have commented that proven killers often meet their death with a look of suppressed hate on their faces. These criminals, it is sure, could never reform, as their own deep rooted certainty of their to violate another’s previous life should go unpunished is an incurable aberation.
