Description
There were red faces at Brighton police headquarters. Back in 1967 detectives failed to solve the murder of 12-year-old schoolboy Keith Lyon. Then when the introduction of DNA testing prompted Keith’s younger brother to ask the police to reopen the investigation they couldn’t find the evidence. In November 2002 workmen installing a sprinkler system at the police station uncovered the long lost evidence in carefully labelled boxes. At the time of going to press this evidence – which is apparently in pristine condition – is in the hands of forensic scientists and techniques not available 35 years ago may now provide a breakthrough. So watch this space.
This month sees the conclusion to the popular exploits of Glasgow’s Inspector Elliott, for the time being at least. However, the series ends on a high. The first of two hard-hitting cases shows how drink, poverty and wretchedness are inseparable, and how drink is a necessity in slum life. Sadly, on this occasion it led to the murder of a shoemaker’s wife. In contrast, the second case has Inspector Elliott embroiled on an even more savage and fiendish murder and dismemberment that became known countrywide as the Pollokshields Tragedy.
