Master Detective November 1994
Wanton criminality seems to be something entirely new in society. Offences like old fashioned theft, while they hurt innocent people, are at least understandable. Crimes like serial killing are less understandable since they are motivated by a deep psychosis which experts have only just begun to comprehend.
We know that these killers are mentally unbalanced even if we don’t see what they believe they have to gain their murderous rampages. But a new strain of purely wanton, impersonal hate-violence seems to be permeating society like a disease. There is an example of it in ‘Three Months in 1994’ – a couple of six-year-olds took it into their heads that they would like to wreck somebody’s house, so they did. A more adult version of the same kind of mindless hate-violence appears to be what was behind the slaying of a homeless man in ‘Thrown Off A Bridge Because He Asked For Change.’ Since the murder was unpremeditated – like a natural reaction to being approached – the two youths were convicted of manslaughter rather then murder. Why did they kill the man?they had no reason to hate him. He had nothing – they had it all – youth, good health, good homes. Just like the six-year-olds who wrecked a strangers house in April this year…
