More than 8,000 spectators saw the Brands Hatch motor racing event on Sunday, July 8th, 1946, unaware that 11-year-old Sheila Martin lay dead in woods at Fawkham Green close by the circuit. She was abducted while playing, raped and strangled with a ribbon.

Over several of the following Sundays police made broadcast appeals at the circuit for help, but no one came forward with information.
