A 15-year-old South Yardley, Birmingham, boy who went out on his blue racing bike on Saturday, September 1st, 1984, was found hanging from a tree nine weeks later in woodland, seven miles from his home, near the city’s airport.

An open verdict was recorded on Mark Billington – which didn’t rule out suicide. But in 2002 the case was re-opened as a murder inquiry.

A juryman from the 1984 inquest said, “At the back of my mind it was always pointing to murder, but we just couldn’t prove it.” Police now want to speak to a group of boys who were talking to Mark outside a building society office on the day he went missing.
