A down-and-out, drug addict, alcoholic and part-time prostitute, Joan Harrison was taken to a derelict garage in Berwick Street, Preston, where she was apparently raped anally and then kicked to death. Her knickers were shoved into her vagina and the killer bit deeply into one of her breasts.

The crime, discovered on Sunday, November 23rd, 1975, was immediately linked to a murder that proved to be the first by Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper. A large amount of semen from blood group B was found in Harrison’s anus, but it was subsequently proved that Sutcliffe was blood group O. However, it was possible that a previous client had anal sex with her, and that her next client was the killer, and all this happened within a short space of time.
