She was known locally as Bella Wilson, a prostitute, and it was her fate to be murdered on Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25th, 1919. Early on the festive morning, she was attacked, stripped and left naked and dead in an alley just behind Liverpool Town Hall.

A bloodstained Irishman was soon afterwards seen staggering into toilets in Lime Street Station. He was arrested on suspicion of murder but released for lack of evidence. The murder of 54-year-old Bella/Elizabeth was never solved.
