Description

Truth is stranger than fiction, they say, and this issue of True Detective certainly confirms that. Nick Yarris’s story could not have been made up. After spending 23 years on Death Row for a crime he did not commit, Nick became the first man in Pennsylvanian history to be exonerated through DNA evidence. Free at last, Nick set about trying to adapt to life outside prison. It wasn’t easy. His parents didn’t recognise their 42-year-old son, who had spent his time on Death Row educating himself and coming to terms with the cruel cards fate had dealt him. And then he was dealt another hand – which this time came up trumps.

Gina French is another person who has packed alot in to her 30 years. Now happily married to her third husband, Gina has written a book about the tragedy that dogged her every move. Some might think that Gina herself caused all the trouble, but an English judge did not agree. "I’ve seldom come across anyone who has reached such a log ebb as you have," he said.

We have two sensational Australian cases which have intrigued the police for many years. In fact, a reader in Perth wrote in to ask us about the "Pyjama Girl" case and we discovered a little-known account by the Sydney police commissioner, William J. MacKay, who uncovered new evidence and laid the case to rest.

Our ‘What makes a woman kill?’ series continues with the story of Anna Hahn, the woman who notched up 18 victims, mainly old, sick men who she befriended, cared for and then killed after they had handed their life-savings over to her.

This issue is full of interesting crime cases which will keep you turning these pages for a long while. And if you have any questions or thoughts that you would like to share with other readers, please don’t hesitate to email us.
