Description

In July 1906 farmer James Morris was found lying in a roadside ditch. This was near the entrance to a wood about a mile from the town of Keady, County Armagh, Ireland, on the road to the village of Darkley. “Morris is an inoffensive man and is well-liked by all creeds and classes,” the Ulster Gazette reported. “He is a temperate man and is not in any way connected with any secret society.” The Gazette added that the police had been unable to find any clue, the case being considered “a complete mystery.” That situation began to change, however, when a 30-year-old storeman told the police an extraordinary story, a story that involved the railway tunnel being constructed in Keady – which has never been used, and is therefore something of a curiosity. Curiouser still is the story of the dynamite needed for its excavation…

For nearly 30 years Wilbert Anthony Dyce remained a free man despite the horrific killing of a woman and her children. Then chance took a hand when a football writer began a book about Laurie Cunningham, one of England’s first black international players. A relative of Cunningham’s had been the partner of the dead woman and a cold case suddenly sprang to life again.

The lawyer at the defence table slumped forward and laid his head on his arms when the verdict was read. “I just don’t understand it,” he groaned. “She’s innocent and we worked damn hard to prove it.” But was he right?
