Description

Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to be involved in or even witness a fatal road accident will tell you it is a horrible sight. So it was in the middle of a May night in 1994 when a 4×4, swerving to avoid a biker, careered off a remote road in Aberdeenshire and crashed into a tree. The female passenger, trapped in the vehicle, died an appalling death as the car burst into flames. The barely-conscious driver managed to crawl out of the fireball to collapse in the road. But miraculously he survived. Did we just say miraculously? Well, not quite. For the driver – later described as a psychopath and a psychological sadist – had planned the whole thing. The “accident” was in fact cold-blooded murder. See over the page for our in-depth report on this incredible case.
The opening scene to Chichester’s Murderous Romeo was set on Selsey Beach and involved a dramatic sea rescue by moonlight. It seemed that an exhausted girl swimmer was being swept out to sea by the tide. And as horrified onlookers watched helplessly, another swimmer was seen battling through the waves to the girl’s aid. But events were not as they seemed. The cheers and applause quickly faded into shocked silence as the two emerged from the surf stark naked. And the brave “rescuer?” He was the eminently respectable Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths for West Sussex and his naked companion wasn’t his wife…
John Fanning and Dubliner Kathleen Boyle had been going steady for 18 months and John at least was madly, obsessively in love. Kathleen wasn’t. After “hundreds” of rows she decided to end their relationship for someone with better prospects; “someone richer.” Romance And Murder At Howth Head, this month’s Classic Irish Murder Case.
