Part one of our incredible new series Grisly Tales Of The Guillotine, for it is 30 years ago this month that France ended capital punishment. True Detective is marking that anniversary with a series on crimes that led directly to the guillotine, an instrument of execution that served France for nearly 200 years.

On July 1st this year Vietnam switched from firing squad to lethal injection, which is in step with many regions in China that have also adopted lethal injection as a means of despatching their criminals. Meanwhile, a Danish company with a factory in Kansas has said it will force wholesalers to sign a contract preventing them from selling Pentobarbital to US prisons for executions. The states which use the chemical will probably already have bought in stockpiles, but they may have to turn to Asia for future supplies of either Pentobarbital or Thiopental.
