Description

If ever a cafe had seen better days it was the Boiling Kettle on the corner of Folkestone’s High Street and Tontine Street. In the early spring of 1955 it was a forlorn sight, standing empty and dilapidated. But the place was about to make headlines. For early on the morning of March 24th the manageress of the dress shop next door heard shouts followed by cries for help. What unfolded would prove to be one of the seaside town’s most incredible cases. It even saw a football pools winner help nab a murderer.

Anna Chapman seemed far too glamorous to be a Russian spy, especially when the term usually conjures up images of dour-faced Cambridge graduates such as Kim Philby or Guy Burgess. But spy she was, her beauty and flame-red hair only aiding and abetting her cause. Yet Anna – otherwise known as Anya Kushchenko – was not unique. In fact, a luscious German brunette preceded her by some 56 years during what became known as the Cold War

A passing couple stumbled upon the battered body of pensioner Gordon Boon in a remote area of Norfolk. But Boon, it turned out, was already well known to the police. In 2001 he was jailed for six years and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life for a string of offences against children. So there were plenty of people with good reason to hate someone like Boon, while few would have any sympathy or actually mourn him. But nobody deserves to be murdered – so who killed him and why did they do it?
