Description

An item of news that you will not have seen reported in the press here at home or in Europe concerns 10 lifers currently in prison in Clairvaux, France, who, a couple of years ago, petitioned the French Government to act on their behalf. So? you might ask. Well, the so is that they asked to be – wanted to be – guillotined. Yes, decapitated. They were brassed-off with the monotonous drudgery of endless years in jail. They wanted out of it. They wanted to die. They were making a point that should be troubling to all of us – that possibly locking someone up for the rest of their natural life might actually be more awful than executing him.

The death penalty debate has never really gone away in Britain, it’s only clubbed into unconsciousness by some “programmed” European politician every now and then. But at least one Brit – True Detective author John Sanders – believes that hanging is the answer to the current sickening spate of murders, and that politicians should face up to their responsibility to protect their electorate and decide to take a life for a life. Turn to page 26 where he sets out his arguments for the restoration of the death penalty…

A letter from a reader in Nottingham who wishes to remain anonymous forms this month’s Questions & Answers. “Grown-ups did not tell children such things in those days, but my dad looked very upset,” the reader explains in part. “It seems that the man next door had come in and murdered his niece.” Indeed he did. Now we can all take a look Inside The Mind Of Uncle George.
