Description

The two couples, the Stokes and the O’Briens, had fallen out over what seemed trifling incidents, and neither would take that initial step to make it up. After all, life is too short for quarrels, right? Wrong. For the argument between two marriage-related families in Dublin in 1934 turned bitter and finally resulted in a cold-blooded murder. Indeed, The Family Secret That Spelt Death is just one of two classic murder cases from Ireland this month. The other – separated by just a few years – also involved two couples, lodgers in a Charlemont Street lodging-house and led directly to the gallows – and the history books. For killer John Toole was destined to become the first man executed at Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison, specially modified to become a “hanging prison.” In point of fact, the prison was to go on to see more executions than any other jail in Ireland.

Meanwhile, just across the Irish Sea in Scotland, a modern-day murder has thwarted the best efforts of Glasgow detectives. It involved the murder of former horse riding instructor Emma Caldwell whose world turned upside down following the death of her sister. Strathclyde officers even beamed a 60-foot image of her onto the side of a tower block in a bid to crack the case. Someone out there knows something. Could that person be you? Can you help solve this murder?
