Description

When David Smith rang Hyde police station to report a murder the duty officer was naturally sceptical, but with that phone call the teenager triggered the investigation that would lead to the capture of two of the most notorious multiple murderers of the 20th century.

However, when news first came in of the arrests in Hyde few copy editors on the national newspapers gave the story much attention. In Fleet Street’s turmoil of news and booze, exciting copy was more along the lines of the Great Train Robbery or Princess Margaret’s latest choice of beau. They saw Manchester as a continent away and just not newsworthy.

But within a short time all that was to change. When stories of missing children, an axe murder and the searches of Saddleworth Moor came to light the Moors Murders, as they came to be known, became the biggest horror story of all time.

For the residents of Hyde it was a nightmare. They could not believe there was such evil in their midst, and the the nation looked on in horror. But this was not the first occasion that murder had put Hyde in the national newspapers, and it certainly would not be the last.

On March 1st this year Belgains braced themslves for what they expected to be the country’s most sensational murder trial ever.

Marc Dutroux, a convicted child-rapist and killer, was arrested and charged with murder in 1996. Incredibly he was not brought to trial for eight years. His crimes had once led to 300,000 Belgains taking to the streets of Brussels calling for vengeance against their government – some members of which, it was whispered, were in a national paedophile ring.

"Politicians, lawyers, judges, policemen, all who hold office are suspect in this country."
