Description

When US servicemen began to arrive in Northern Ireland in 1942, the locals were quick to welcome them into their homes. Killycolpy, County Tyrone, fisherman Patrick Wylie – together with his wife and four children – was just one of them. Private William Harrison often ate with the Wylies and frequently accompanied Patrick to the local pub. He had been a close friend of the family for about a year when he headed off to the local shop with seven-year-old Patricia Wylie to buy some lemonade. But it led to Private Harrison becoming one of 18 American servicemen to be hanged for either rape or murder in Great Britain during the Second World War.

When Donald Hume stood in the Old Bailey dock in January 1950 he looked self-assured as he pleaded not gulity to the grisly dismemberment murder of car dealer Stanley Setty. From the witness-box Hume told an improbable story. But “improbable stories do happen,” Mr. Justice Sellers pointed out in his summing-up. Except the story Hume told was not only improbable; it was a downright lie! The sensational story of the man who got away with murder forms this month’s instalment in the Notable British Trials series.

They shared the same name and wanted their share of the family fortune – but did they share the guilt?

Has America unearthed another serial killer? Gary Hilton has spent the past two years living in his van while travelling through the dense forests from North Carolina to Georgia to Florida. People remembered Gary Hilton because of his unkempt appearance and the fact that Dandy, his red Irish setter, never left his side. But Dandy wasn’t so much loyal as terrified.
