Description

The photograph on this and the next page is an extraordinary one, considering that Robert Brown could have spent many years with his mother, and not be chained to a prison warder, if he had told the parole board what they wanted to hear. This is denied by the board, who maintain it is a myth that they do not recommend the release of convicted killers who maintain their innocence. But other high profile cases suggest otherwise.

A crime profiler identified what he believes are unusual aspects at a murder scene. Tidiness is the key because all the items used; the rope, rubbish bags, sticky tape, and rubber gloves worn by the killer, all belonged in the victims’ home. And strangely, he says, all unused materials, such as the roll of stick tape, were put away tidily. Also the bedroom door was closed when the killer left. But were these clues too obvious? Were they set-up to point the finger at a certain suspect?

Six bodies lay on the lawn, behind them a house burned to the ground. And as the police probed the terrible tragedy near the village of Malahide, County Dublin, they were confronted with one mystery after another. Two of those remain as puzzling today as they did in 1926. What are the two enduring mysteries of La Mancha?
