True Detective July 2023

Description

Marc Dutroux. For Belgians his name remains toxic; a reminder of a criminal horror story that unfolded in the 1990s and left the nation collectively traumatised, outraged and deeply troubled. A rapist and killer, Dutroux was dubbed “The Beast of Belgium” by the press as the world looked on, appalled by his depraved, psychopathic actions. The twisted, callous treatment of victims Melissa Russo and Julie Lejeune left all in the know horrified. Yet there is much more to the Dutroux story than the cruel fate he inflicted upon those two children. Prepare for some unpleasant revelations in a case that even today remains controversial – and which asks uncomfortable questions of the Belgian authorities. Our report is titled “Paedophile Monster Kept Girls Locked Up In Dungeon Of Doom”.

When convicted US murderer Michael Townson was being moved to a new prison, he decided he wanted a word with the police. He’d been behind bars for a decade but he now wanted them to know about another murder, an unsolved killing from years earlier. Was his word credible? See “America’s Most Evil – Serial Killer Gets A Conscience” in this issue for the full story.

Finally, to the north-east of England and a long-ago bank robbery that ended in tragedy. Read “Questions & Answers – Two Die In Newcastle Bank Raid” and be shocked.
