Description

The Fees should never have been allowed to operate a slaughterhouse so near the town centre, their neighbours said. For some time residents of the market town of Clones had been complaining about a foul stench, and as Christmas approached they wanted the nuisance dealt with. The source of the smell was clearly coming from the back yard of young Joseph Fee, a butcher, who lived at the family home on the corner of Jubilee and Fermanagh Streets. The smell had become intolerable, and to make matters worse there was a dung heap in the back garden too… part 1 of the new series Classic Irish Murder Cases.

No one saw the murder of Mary McCarthy. No one, not even the experts who filed in and out of court, could say which day it happened, and no murder weapon was ever identified. Furthermore, no direct evidence could be laid at the door of any man in the village of New Inn, near where Mary lived, in rural Tipperary. But someone, the gardai decided, had to hang for it and they picked farmer Harry Gleeson. That was the start of what must rate as one of the greatest modern travesties in Irish legal history, a travesty in which the real culprits were a parish priest, corrupt cops, an incompetent judge and a bunch of villagers who erected a wall of silence around Mary’s murder.
