Description

For 20 long, pitifully agonising minutes one Sunday evening in the Spring of 1873 Edward Walsh beat his pregnant wife Mary with a lump of wood. She wept and wailed, cried out for mercy and writhed on the floor in a vain attempt to avoid the blows raining down on her. Finally Walsh stepped back, sweating and exhausted. He later said he was surprised when he was unable to revive her. And if that wasn’t enough he went on to write his name in the history books by being the last person executed at Castlebar Prison, County Mayo, Ireland.

“I don’t mind dying,” John Dorgan said in mitigation at the end of his murder trial at Lewes Assizes in December 1943. “I’ve tried to do my duty…I’ve stood up to it in the trenches, where I saw men crucified, murdered and butchered. I’ve seen the worst things one can
see – and I’ll always see them until I die”… a day which
wasn’t long in coming.

A case from 1860s Somerset that once enthralled the nation has become more widely known again through a book on the case published in 2008 and a TV drama aired in 2011. And thanks to TD readers Cate Spalding and Sue Warmsley it is also this month’s Questions & Answers feature.

When their eyes met it was love at first sight. He was a big, strong peasant; she was slim and attractive. But what Germaine Godefroy liked most about Albert Leloy was that he had some land. Land brought in money. Unsuspecting Albert was soon to find out that his new wife craved nothing more than money – and sex…
