Highlights this issue:

Everything in the case was bizarre. There was a wedding reception for a marriage that never took place, a “hit-man for hire” website, a woman calling herself Lyingeyes and a deadly poison concealed in a contact lens container. It was a case that would rivet all Ireland when it broke in June 2007. See our lead story this issue and you’ll find out exactly what we mean!

We’ve a new series this issue: “Murder in the Village.” The first story is called “The Strange Affair At Pluckley Grange.” Today it is known as Bethersden House and has featured more than once in the filming for television of H.E. Bates’ The Darling Buds Of May. But in 1908 the house was known as Pluckley Grange, situated just over a mile from Pluckley railway station in Kent. The residents back then were an odd couple. He was German-born developer Louis Berndt, she his English-born wife Edith Lillian Berndt. For three years they lived under a veil of reclusiveness, but that was lifted in the most dramatic fashion one morning in March 1911 when two bodies were found inside their home.

Doris was 39 when she married Harry and they immediately hit it off. She gave him space to get on with his job as pub landlord – and with his part-time occupation. As a couple they had been feted by the press in 1965 when Harry’s opinion had been particularly sought after. Doris was extremely proud of her husband and felt his story was an important part of our crime history. A warm and gregarious man, she felt he had earned his position in the history of modern Britain. So, what was it like to be married to a hangman, Britain’s last hangman no less? See this issue for our amazing insight.
