Description

It could have been a scene from a wild west movie. The “bandits,” tense, their faces masked, lay in wait in the long grass alongside the railway track. Ears strained, they heard the distant hum of the 12-coach night mail train – a hum that reverberated down the line, its rhythm gradually increasing. Someone whispered, “Here she comes, lads.” Someone else glanced at his watch. It was 3.10 a.m. on a warm, moonless night in August 1963. As the train – pulled by a 100-ton type 40 diesel locomotive – thundered through the Buckinghamshire countryside at 80 mph, engine driver Jack Mills saw a yellow warning signal silhouetted against the dawn sky. He eased on the brakes and the huge train began to slow, finally juddering to a halt at a remote spot called Sears Crossing…Turn to page 18 for part 10 of Crimes That Made The Headlines and the 50th anniversary of The Great Train Robbery, which even today remains the largest-ever robbery committed in Britain.

The police sergeant could hardly believe his eyes. The scene he found at a County Offaly mansion in the early hours of July 8th, 1985, was disturbing to say the least. In a pool of blood at his feet was the body of Father Niall Molloy, apparently beaten to death, his battered and lacerated face covered by a towel. That was how this amazing case was revealed to the world. How it will all end is still shrouded in mystery. But the case is still making national headlines and looks set to do so for some time to come.

This month Fleet Street photographer Edward J. “Dixie” Dean concludes his series My Life Among The Murderers by taking us back to the bunker deep under the Berlin Chancellery where Hitler made his last diehard stand. It was here, you may recall, that Hitler chose to take his own life, just one jump aheard of the advancing Russians…

The visiting council dignitaries were all on board the nuclear sub docked at Southampton. They were having a look around at the very moment a member of the sub’s crew came on duty. But the heavily-armed sailor was in no condition to be put in charge of powerful weapon. As well as consuming much alcohol there was murder seething in his heart.
