Description

If you were lucky enough to be young in the 1960’s you may remember the excitement of open air concerts when thousands of people gathered together to listen to live music, smoke marijuana, and take their clothes off. The world seemed full of peace and love. But that all came to a shattering end at Altamont, the free concert given by the Rolling Stones in America. Peace and Love was replaced by violence and disruption. The Hell’s Angels who were unofficially hired to provide security for the band became embroiled in fights all over the arena and Meredith Hunter, an 18-year-old black man, was stabbed to death. Now the case has been re-opened, but has anything new been learnt?

This month’s True Detective takes you to South Africa, where a farmer has been convicted of feeding one of his workers to lions; to California, where 38-year-old Angelina Rodriguez sits on Death Row for killing her husband with oleander and anti-freeze; and to Atlanta, Georgia, where a 26-year-old woman did something to make her grandfather proud of her.

“Once in a while you come across a case with unique circumstances,” a Nashville policeman said. “This one rates right up there with them.” True enough, but would you believe that in the 1920’s, police in Milwaukee and Los Angeles were dealing with a crime committed under almost exactly the same circumstances?

Having an extensive library of cases enables True Detective to bring you such extraordinary coincidences in the history of crime and makes our magazine truly unique. Enjoy the issue!
