Description

"How can men who have remained at home in quiet and safety be competent to judge the brainwaves of a man who has seen so much death that it is of no importance? Why is it not the jury for such cases composed of men who have been in the tenches and know all the horrors and how these can affect some men?

This was the question Marshall Hall strove to answer in the aftermath of the First World War when he found himself defending a number of former soldiers whose lives had been changed by their battlefield experiences.

Frederick Rothwell Holt and Ronald Light were two of the ex-army men, and a third soldier, blinded in battle, stood accused of murder. But there the similarity ended. Marshall Hall put a convincing case that Holt was mad, he argued that Light was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the blindman was unlucky to have a wife who died of excitement. Could Marshall Hall save them from the gallows?

The winter of 1963 was one of the coldest and longest on record. But people of Fallowfield in Lancashire remember it for a difference reason. On January 2nd nine-year-old susan Thomas told her mum she was off to visit her friend in the next street. But this was not true. Instead she headed to Platt Fields in nearby Rusholme where some of her friends had gone to skate. Sadly, that was the last anyone saw of Susan, and to this day the crime remains unsolved, and forms the first in a short series of murder mysteries from Manchester reinvestigated by Sara Lee.

Until May 6th this year Carl Isaacs had the distinction of being America’s longest-serving Death Row inmate. Then on that day the lengthy appeals process in the US finally ran out for this seven-time killer. ‘On Death Row’ the shocking murder spree that put Carl Isaacs in the death house.
