Description

Included in the feast of true crime reading this month there are two cases we feel need a special mention. Firstly, the case "If I Am To Die So Can The Wife", poses something of a moral dilemma.

After being a heavy smoker all his life 65-year-old retired accountant Harvey Chaput was told that he had terminal lung cancer and had less than a year to live, a scenario that would tear most families apart. No so, Pauline, his wife for 42 years. Indeed, she didn’t seem too upset at the terrible news at all.

Why? Because for the past 30 years of their marriage Pauline had been openly cheating on Harvey with a successful businessman and former politician. Everyone in their quiet little town knew and tittle-tattled about it. In short, Harvey had been made a laughing stock for longer than he cared to remember. So when those doctors only gave him a year to live he did the one thing that he reasoned he should have done a long time ago – he dusted off a couple of guns and took the law into his own hands…

The second case that warrants a brief mention begins on these pages, and again it poses something of a dilemma.

Why did two young men from a good background with seemingly everything going for them turn to living rough on the streets as winos, their lives ending like so much flotsam in a canal?

One of the saddest aspects of this case is that when they vanished they were not missed…
