Description

Many murders of course are never solved; others very quickly so. Diligent police work often goes a long way in cracking the puzzle. Incredibly, in the case of Texan teacher Irene Garza, more than five decades would pass by before her suspected killer found himself before a jury – surely something of a record in the annals of crime history? Irene, a former beauty queen, had gone to confession on Saturday, April 16th, 1960 – and never made it home again. Days later her strangled and battered body was recovered from a canal, several miles from the Sacred Heart Church in McAllen. Priest Father John Feit denied her killing. Was the investigation hindered by the fact that the main suspect was a Catholic priest? Was Irene a political pawn? Should an alleged confession to murder have been acted upon sooner?

Sadly, as long as the River Thames has been rolling, corpses have been pulled out of its murky depths. In a new series, River Of Death, we’ll be bringing you some of those murderous tales from the river’s past and present. We begin with Was Incest The Cause Of Greenwich Baby-Killing?, a 1940s case in which the discovery of a baby washed up on the shore sparked an intriguing murder investigation.

Finally, in Hanged In Australia, we journey down under to meet Frances Knorr, a tough Londoner – described by 1890s police as having “very loose habits, immoral character” – who became a notorious baby farmer.
