Description

Fifty-five years after the bodies of young mother Beryl Evans and her year-old baby were found stuffed in an outside wash-house of the murder factory that was 10 Rillington Place, her brother Peter still has to leave the room when White Christmas is played on the TV or radio. It evokes the unbearable poignancy of his sister’s youthful optimism, so cruelly cut short. For Peter, his sister Pat and brother Basil, there is no end to the agony of their loss, especially as the case involved one of Britain’s most notorious miscarriages of justice. Interest in the grisly events at 10 Rillington Place continues long after the old terraced houses were demolished and the road renamed. Each time the story is mentioned it brings fresh pain to Peter and his siblings. While the wrongful execution of Beryls’ husband – until now that is. For the first time in 55 years the family of Beryl Evans speak about their sister’s tragic death at the hands of notorious British serial killer.

The editor fingered the documents on his desk, leafed through the black and white photos, and studied the latest information from his chief crime reporter seated before him. When he finally looked up, the editor ordered, “Smash this gang of ponces!” Duncan Webb, The People’s chief correspondent, duly set about to do just that via his newspaper. So who were “this gang of ponces?” They were none other than the Messina brothers, who terrorised London’s West End in the 1940s and 50s.

The government’s recently-introduced licensing change to permit round-the-clock drinking fills one Hewarth, Gateshead, widow with horror. If her husband’s killers hadn’t been drunk, she says, he’d still be alive. Will 24-hour drinking result in more murders – and more widows like Mrs. Chard?
