Crime cases in which the personality of the victim is of equal or greater interest than the motivation, planning and execution of that crime are very rare. Usually it is the offences which appall us and claim our attention, irrespective of the thoughts we spare for the victims and their loved ones. However, The Life and Crimes of the Evil Michael Sams takes a distinct second place to that of his last victim. Stephanie Slater. Sams had already killed once, in cold blood, with a psychopathic disregard for the life he so casually snuffed out. What is so special about Stephanie Slater? Well, she forced him to have a conscience – and emerged from a horrifying ordeal alive – no mean feat considering that she had no idea of just what she was dealing with.
Many kidnappers find that their plans go awry and end in murder. Sams was just another one of them – a nobody without feelings for anyone else. He abducted a young woman who was not only far cleverer than he was, she was far braver than the cowardly wimp that is Michael Sams.
Pent up rage that has to be expressed with a gun is theme in two of this month’s cases – one set in the Manchester area earlier this century, A Butler’s Revenge – and the other, a modern courtroom drama in which an American lawyer ran amok while the court was in session. In both cases, the anger was disdirected. In neither case was the result satisfying to the gunman.
But there can be no greater example of unsatisfactory retribution than that exacted on Margaret Allen, a mixed up woman hanged at Strangeways – because nobody wanted to find an excuse for her. It’s a classic case of justice without compassion or common sense.
