Description
Human nature! Wouldn’t it be nice if we could see ourselves as others do – and act to improve our behaviour accordingly?
William Davies was a man – like so many – who didn’t know when he was well off. Unkind to the woman in his life, he made it his mission to make her miserable, and finally told her to pack her bags and leave. Much to his surprise, she did just that – she’d got herself a more appreciative man! There was no undoing the harm…
Another killer with tunnel vision – he couldn’t see beyond his own needs – was John Thomas Dunn, who found himself in court on a charge of wilful murder and was astounded by how readily his children testified against him. "Was he a kind husband?" his daughter was asked by the prosecutor. And she, like her other siblings, said that he was neither a kind husband nor a good father. It need hardly be said that before going to the gallows, self-pitying to the last, Dunn failed to see the need to hang him!
Some years ago a TV documentary traced the life and crimes of Charles Manson, whose influence on his devotees was so complete that even now, around 30 years later, many of them still adore him. Interviews with several of them hinted at his amazing charisma – and interviews with Manson himself, locked up for ever, were conducted in short, staccato bursts. The authorities had good reason to fear that even via the television screen, too much exposure to his glittering eyes, reasonable-sounding arguments and hypnotic personality might even now influence for the worse a new generation of followers. Locked up, Manson may be almost harmless, but that does not mean that he has no imitators.
