Description
Have you ever wondered why it is that when people sober up after being very drunk they sometimes have no recollection of what they saw and did when they were drunk? It is because when poisoned by alcohol the brain is interrupted in its function of passing data from short-term into long-term memory. But occasionally, if that foregetful person was to become drunk a second time, he might remember everything from his first intoxication, with perfect clarity. Both are common enough phenomena among the drinking classes – what is not so common is the long-term suppression of a memory for years on end, from childhood into adulthood. Yet this month we have two cases in which a child suppressed a memory of murder, only to have it painfully, hauntingly return when she was grown up. And, equally amazingly in both cases, the police took these women seriously and convicted the murderers!
