Description

In many ways eminent Victorian William Whiteley personifies the sterotype of the self-made man. A man with a highly developed moral sense which did not apply to himself, Whitely basked in the glory of smug respectability which his fortune bought him. Most of his staff at the department store he owned loathed him. Arsonists with a grude made frequent attacks on his property. But finally it was his murder which exposed him for the old hyprocrite he really was. The public was so sympathetic towards his killer that instead of letting him hang, they got up a petition for a reprieve…

Sexual peccadilos no longer have the same power to shock most people, but passion still becomes exaggerated when it’s forbidden. At least, that was the case in Leicester’s Red Light Murder, for which a killer is serving life. How did a petite prostitute so provoke a well-built man that he stabbed her no fewer than 13 times? It was alleged that his savage attack was entirely out of character.

Salcombe’s Dark Mystery goes back 18 years – and the official solution seems no closer. Many readers may feel that the answer is blindingly obvious – but no evidence has ever been found which would provide concrete proof – nothing strong enough to bring about a prosecution – against anyone. It is possible that the woman and her two children who disappeared all those years ago in Salcombe, Devon, are alive and well and chuckling at the sight of their story as it surfaces from time to time. But how likely is it? The question burns on.
