Description

The "jinx number" it was called – No. 13, which many law-abiding citizens the world over are superstitious enough to regard as distinctly unlucky, but in Weathersfield Prison, connecticut, in 1954 you could have got a powerful argument to the contrary. Incidentally, for those tidy-minded readers among you who are dying to know, the "unlucky No. 13" label eventually went to William Lorain, who was put to death for murder on July 11th, 1955.

Although Connecticut still employs the electric chair to dispatch killers, records show it has not seen active service since 1960 when 36-year-old Joseph Taborsky was executed.

Starting this month is the new series Tales From Old New York, and it begins with the sinister Ruttinger-Wright case.
