Description

They eyes of Britain are focused firmly on the law right now, with emotions running high about the conviction of two little boys for the wanton murder of a toddler. Most of us, fortunately, can never begin to comprehend the depth of the grief felt by the family of the little victim, but the whole nation sympathises. How does anyone fight down anger and keep a sense of proportion? Readers of True Crime have a slight advantage in that respect, in that a varied collection of factual, shocking stories is presented month by month. Recent and not-so-recent cases that caused equal outrage help to formulate a view of society overall, which in turn helps the reader to gain a better understanding of crime as a whole.

The three-page picture feature was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek look at ‘the good old days’ but it seems more than usually apt this month. But read how a man acquitted of the murder of Mary Ashford caused such widespread discontent that the defendant was obliged to leave the country for his own well-being!

Spare some sympathy for the family of Lesley Whittle – and remember that her killer is still behind bars with no foreseeable release date in sight.

A case that caused a furore in London was that of Styllou Christofi, who slew her daugther-in-law because she was insanely jealous of the status of European women as compared with the peasant class of women in her native land. Should she have hanged? She was obviously insane but insisted she was not.
