Description

They say there’s nowt so queer as folks – and Fred Cross, the villain of Suicide on the Gallows, was just about as peculiar as they come. He murdered a victim at random (who just happened to be a young married man with a child) because he wanted to be hanged. And should any of you worry about him getting his wish, there is no need. He hanged all right – but he changed his mind about wanting to die…

The 19-year-old who terrorised Bermuda in the 1950s with a string of murders was awfully lucky. He was caught – but crime on that island was so rare (or at least petty) that the size of the police force would not have been adequate to prevent a lynch mob from tearing the youth limb from limb, had they so desired. So it does credit to the people of Bermuda that they were too civilised to attempt it. The murders were so horrifying that it came as a pleasant surprise to the local police – and to Scotland yard men who solved the crime – that everything went so smoothly once the arrest was made.
