Description

The hot chestnut that is capital punishment has and will provide us with hours and hours of discussion and keep book publishers in work well into the next century. Suffice to say that our compelling story ‘If Only He Had Gone Fishing’, adds fuel to the fire.

In 1986 Richard Drinkard was convicted of three counts of capital murder. His defence attorney pleaded for his client’s life, the jury, however, were not swayed by eloquent speeches and Drinkard was sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out in May this year.

Apart from the "cruel and unusual" time Drinkard spent on Death Row – 11 years – all is straightforward and normal, you might say. Until you consider that in the same week that Drinkard was dispatched three other men on Death Row in Texas were also executed, setting a new record for the state. A further goal was established by the end of May with seven executions in a month! And now that dubious record seems likely to soon be eclipsed.

The rate of executions in Texas has been accelerated by a new state law which speeds up the appeals process. The new legislation’s impact on those awaiting execution is naturally enough demoralising. "I wouldn’t say they’re in a panic," said an official source, "but they understand the seriousness of the situation."
