Description

Robert Black – a man without a redeeming feature? You will probably recall news from many years ago about a little girl who vainshed, and more recent dramatic and welcome news that he has been caught, tried and found guilty. Brian Marriner has done his homework on this case, raising for the discerning reader some very uncomfortable questions about the police handling of a number of cases. Everyone was shocked by the miscarriage of justice suffered by Stefan Kiszko who served 16 years for a murder which, with the benefit of hindsight, could more certainly be attributed to Black. Whenever a case of such unimaginable proportions breaks, inevitably the police will misjudge the situation – they linked some of the murder victims to the same killer, but Black’s killer career spanned some 20 years and may not have been confined soley to the British Isles!

If there is anything at all to be learned by the Robert Black case, it is the lesson we failed to learn in Peter Sutcliffe’s day – not that there are evil people about, or what makes them kill. It might satisfy our curiosity but is of little practical advantage in stopping these monstrous predators. What we must do is use the advanced technology available to increase the flow of information between one police force and another. If we don’t start right away Robert Black’s victims – the known and the unknown children he might have killed – will have died in vain. We owe it to every parent who grieves for a murdered child…
