Edinburgh in the late 1820s was not the place to be if you were frail, vulnerable, or elderly – for a despicable pair of killers were on the look-out for victims. William Burke (below) and William Hare are often portrayed simply as grave robbers; and in film their exploits have in recent times been treated as black comedy material. But as our fascinating, myth-shattering report shows, the pair were brutal opportunists who murdered again and again until their luck finally ran out…
Gloria Booth had just started working as a barmaid in Ruislip, Middlesex, in 1971, when she was strangled and her body mutilated. Her killer has never been found. Could she though have been an early victim of the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe? Gloria’s death is among a number of unsolved murders which a retired police officer believes show hallmarks of the notorious killer. Her family are convinced too.
