Description

Two young choirboys made the grim discovery in the grounds of St. Luke’s Church, Holloway, north London, that Sunday morning of July 21st, 1946. What they first thought was a bundle of clothes, then a drunk sleeping it off, turned out to be the corpse of a woman – a fan of the film Tarzan and the Leopard Woman and the world’s champion girl weightlifter, no less. And her killer? He was apparently sleepwalking at the time of the crime, a condition brought on by a drink-induced disease of the mind.

“Friends forever,” folk who knew them called Cindy Wolosick and Diana Thames, who for 25 years were as close as sisters, holidaying together and supporting each other in times of personal crisis. But all that changed in August 2005 after a bitter argument about money. The prosecutor described what happened next as “a brutal execution.”

“I’ve seen eight men die in the electric chair. I’ve watched them walk that ‘last mile’ and I’ve shared the vigil of their final hours, that dark time when all hope is at last extinguished. From a mechanical point of view, if you’ve witnessed one execution you’ve seen them all. But each one leaves an impression that remains with you forever. The atrocity of the crime for which he is being punished fades into insignificance.” So, have you ever wondered what it would be like to witness an execution?
