Description

Sometimes it can pay to play a waiting game – and sometimes detectives have no choice but to do just that. Take, for example, the "cold case cops." Against seemingly impossible odds they’ve reopened and solved case after baffling case, often with the help of the latest advances in forensic science. In the process, they’ve brought to justice many a killer who must have thought they’d outwitted the law.

Which brings us to the so-called BTK killer, who terrorised the Wichita, Kansas, area in the 1970s and 80s. He got his nickname because of his habit of binding, torturing and killing his victims. His crimes have never been solved, and police are no nearer to apprehending him today than they were when his trail was still relatively warm, despite never having given up the search. Perhaps soon their dogged determination will pay off, because the BTK killer has returned to taunt the authorities. With luck, this will turn out to be his fatal mistake, and up-to-date police methods will finally bring him to justice.

Alice Hewitt wasn’t one for the waiting game. It seemed she just couldn’t wait till her mother was dead. But fate made her wait for what must have seemed an eternity until death overtook her, when her public execution was horrifically botched. Was justice done?
