Description

The young and the elderly are prominently feature in this classic issue, begining with the ordeal of a north London landlady, forced to spend a week of terror with a man who, shortly before, had beaten an old lady to death.

"He followed me everywhere, even stood outside when I went to the toilet. It was more than my life was worth to try and go to the police," she recalled when he was sentenced to death.

In another chilling case a 15-year-old girl shot dead her baby-sitter, than discovered the body was a problem, it was just too heavy to get rid of. Anyway, she had other more pressing needs. She phoned a guy she fancied, invited him over and they had sex. The body could wait.

In a staggering case from Florida an old lady complained to a 16-year-old about his swearing to a rap song. For her criticism she was beaten to death, her body painted red, and set on fire.

Many readers will fill sympathy for a mother and father who have spent the last eight years trying to bring the man they believe murdered their daughter to justice. Bud did he kill his wife, either accidentally or on purpose?

The final case is one of Britain’s most famous of the early 1800s, with a story within a story. Sixty-year-old John Tawell was sentenced to be publicly hanged in Aylesbury’s Market Square, but there was a row over what he wore. The Spectator magazine said that there was more discussion about the condemned man’s clothes than there was about that year’s spring fashions! Good reading
