Description

For nearly 23 years Peter Reyn-Bardt lived with a terrible secret. And with the passing of those years he began to think that he was safe. In 1960 he killed his wife at their cottage in Wilmslow, Cheshire, dismembered her corpse and buried her head. Then in 1983 a man digging for peat unearthed a human skull just 300 yards from Reyn-Bardt’s home. It was the breakthrough the police had long awaited, for the discovery was enough to induce him to confess to his wife’s murder. Ironically, Reyn-Bardt had been panicked into confessing by a skull which was not his wife’s.
What happened to Dorothy Jane Scott? Had she suddenly run off with a new love, lost her memory in a freak accident, or fallen prey to one of the many serial killers finding innocent victims across the US? In May 1980 Dorothy dropped one of her work colleagues at a hospital after he had been bitten by a black widow spider. Then as she went to fetch her car from the dimly-lit car park she vanished. "The old saying that there is no such thing as a perfect crime is a lie," said one of the investigators. "There are plenty of perfect crimes. Just bring up ‘missing persons’ on your computer"
London-born Bertram Stuart fled to California’s High Sierras following the horrors of the First World War in an attempt to regain his shattered health. Instead, all he found was torture and death at the hands of two young killers who tried to force him to reveal the hiding-place of a hidden hoard he probably didn’t have.
