Description

Bridget Stovall and Andrea Yates are not related. In fact they don’t even know one another, but their lives are intrinsically linked by murder – the drowning murders of their children. And although their cases are very similar whether justice was adminstered fairly and equally is another matter. Both women had been good mothers until the appalling last moments of their children’s lives. Both thought their children were possessed by the devil, both had become obsessed with religious symbols and neither seemed to comprehend what they had done. Both Bridget and Andrea suffered from paranoid delusions and hallucinations, both did the same thing for the same reason, yet the courts treated them very differently.

For nearly 30 years little, white-haired 80-year-old Emily Pye had run her grocery shop in Gibbet Street, Halifax. Until Saturday, June 8th, 1957; when she was found dead by her niece and her husband. Emily had been murdered; battered about the head with a fireside companion set and the shop’s till had been emptied. Today, 46 years on, the murder is still a mystery and looks likely to remain so. It brings to mind an old Yorkshire adage: "See all, hear all, say nowt."

When a former cop is sent to prison for life for murdering his estranged wife he can expect no favours in jail. But was John Maloney guilty of anything, and was there even a murder? According to prosecutors Maloney struck his wife over the head, strangled her with his bare hands and then set her home on fire, leaving her body to burn. The jury believed this. Murder, after all, was the only explanation they heard for what happened to Sandy Maloney. But evidence that never made it to court strongly suggests that Sandy wasn’t murdered at all.
