Edith Thompson’s execution in 1923 for the murder of her husband may have been one of the greatest miscarriages in the history of British justice. This month in Master Detective we reconsider the case and focus on the judge whose handling of it probably led to an innocent woman being hanged.

Armed with three knives, an axe and wearing a bullet-proof vest Kim De Gelder strode into the day nursery, slashing to right and left. When he finally fled, he left behind three bodies, and a dozen other children badly injured.

“I’ve been hitting the bottle and shooting coke. It made me real crazy. I couldn’t stop killing people. It seemed like I’d have to stop every fifteen or twenty miles just to kill somebody. It was sort of getting to be a habit,” said Marion Pruett after his arrest.
