Description

There are so many curiosities in the world of crime that it is very difficult to fully categorise them. Our first two stories deal with cases in which the bodies of the victims were never found. Muriel McKay, of course, was the first person in Britain to be kidnapped for ransom. Arthur Fried, the victim in the second case, was incinerated when his kidnappers panicked – thanks to a meddling newspaper reporter who tricked the story out of Mrs. Fried, and published it…

Another curiosity is what on the face of it looked like a straightforward case of murder for gain. But ‘The Strange Case Of Right-handed Fred’ is still intriguing because the victim was manually strangled with the killer’s left hand – and Fred’s war injuries meant that his left hand was virtually powerless…sifting through the evidence the jury was in no doubt, and the cheerful upholsterer kept smiling at the verdict.

Doubt is a tricky matter for juries, and our Australian case is a minefield of difficulties. A country parson and his wife were relatively new to the area – and it wasn’t long before the parson set his sights on the daughter of a wealthy and influential parishioner. His wife was now superfluous to requirements – and conveniently died after a brief illness. A parson carrying on an adulterous affair is scandal enough – but when it was learned that the dead wife’s illness was caused by poison…
