Description
The fate of a British father of five was sealed from the moment he put his suitcase down in front of the Chinese customs officers. His arms were whipped behind his back, his wrists handcuffed – and he was on a one-way trip to the death chamber. For the man’s suitcase contained 9lb of heroin – enough, said the Chinese, to kill 27,000 people. And in China, drug smuggling is met with zero tolerance. Appeals for clemency from all over the world were to achieve nothing and no amount of diplomatic activity could save Akmal Shaikh from the dubious distinction of being the first European put to death in China for almost 60 years.
There was nothing regal about Tron Square even though it was just off Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile. Drab though it was, its residents had done their best to give the place a festive look for the Queen’s coronation in 1953. However, there was nothing festive about the heavily-bloodstained sheet that dangled from the window of a first-floor flat. It signalled murder, the killer securing a place for himself in British criminal history.
