When asked why he had applied to become a hangman John Ellis simply replied, "I don’t know." If you think that seems a wholly inappropriate answer, then you’re right, it was, but Ellis jog the job and he went on to become one of Britain’s best known hangmen involved in over 200 executions, although during his initial interview he refrained from revealing the fact that he couldn’t bring himself to kill a chicken. As a lad he had run away from home after his father made him work in the family’s barber shop in Rochdale. But at the age of 22, while employed in a textile machinery workshop, he knew where his future lay – to the dismay of his family. His first job was an assistant to William Billington at a double execution in Newcastle Prison in December, 1901. The legend was in the making…
