Description

If a sighting of a UFO or ghost was reported, would you be more likely to believe it if it came from the lips of an upper middle-class professional man than, say, un unemployed roadsweeper? The chances are that you would prefer to say no, but in truth the answer would be yes. Homicide detectives cannot allow themselves to be swayed by the class-equals-credibility bias. They built up a case of attempted murder against Edinburgh’s Napier College lecturer in bio-chemistry. Dr. Paul Agutter. Why should a man with his high stake in society deliberately plant Safeway’s own brand of tonic water back on their shelves? Tonic water spiked with deadly-nightshade! And were the police rewarded with a succesful conviction? Yes! Isn’t it nice to know that nobody is above the law?

A comparable case from America. Again, the motive was a woman. And here to the villain was prepared to risk the lives of innocent people in the furtherance of his goal. "Hero" Fireman Set The Blaze is a story of misguided ideas – but unlike his Scottish counterpart, at least he felt some genuine shame for his misdeeds.

It really is quite amazing to discover the lengths an investigator will go to in order to secure physical evidence to tighten up a case. Imagine reconstructing five splintered soft drinks bottles simply to determine whether a shard of glass found at the suspect’s propery was a piece of one of those bottles. It is a fact that the clever detective – the one who solves the murder – is patient and painstaking. Maverick cops who go speeding around and acting on hunches are either the stuff of fiction or else the dole queue…though having said that, there is once case included this month of a big miscarriage of justice. ‘Grim Tragedy Of The Sell Family Massacre’, and it is written in an unusual angle, delving not so much into the crime but into the character of the real victim – a 16-year-old who spent the next 21 years in prison for a crime committed by an unknown team of murderous robbers. Like all good stories it leaves you thinking…Why for instance, if the evidence was available at the time of the trial was it not investigated further? Were the forces of law and order frightened? And who stood to gain by locking up an innocent youth?
