Description

Back in the 1880s – then as now – Kingston Hill, bordering Richmond Park, was one of London’s most desirable residential districts. On the moonless night of September 22nd, 1881, the staff at one of its mansions was woken by the sound of gunshots. Sprawled on the house’s front steps was Police Constable Frederick Atkins. He had been shot three times by a would-be burglar. See page 34 for the Victorian cop-killing that baffled the whole of the Metropolitan Police.
“Yes, she’s dead,” John Gardiner told Strathclyde Police after his wife Margaret went missing. “I didn’t murder her. It was an accident.” Apparently, she lost her balance during an argument and fell down concrete steps by the back door of their house in Dunbartonshire, hitting her head. The back of her head, he told police, “caved in like an eggshell.” Unsurprisingly, the police didn’t believe him. Would you? See page 6 for this modern shocker from Scotland.
Mention Le Mans today and everyone thinks of motor racing. But some 75 years ago the town was the talk of France for another reason altogether.
